The cam angle sensor monitors the frequency at which the camshaft is turning. The camshaft is a cylindrical rod used to operate the valves in the engine. When the camshaft turns, the individual cams push against valves or lifters and cause them to open and close. The cam angle sensor records the rate at which the camshaft is rotating. By extension, this tells the ECU the rate at which the engine’s valves are opening and closing.
