The suburb is bounded by the Calder Freeway in the north, Overnewton Road and Taylors Creek in the east, Lady Nelson Way in the south and the Bendigo railway line in the west. The suburb is mostly composed of recent developments dating from the 1990s with shopping centres, cinemas, a bowling alley, schools and kindergartens, train station, bus lines, parks, gardens and sports grounds.
Sydenham is a suburb 25 km north-west of Melbourne. Its local government area is the City of Brimbank with a population of some10,000 people. First settled in the 1860s it has a number of education facilities including the Catholic Regional College Sydenham, a coeducational senior high school and shares some of its grounds with Emmaus Catholic Primary School. It also includes the Sydenham-Hillside Primary School, which is one of the country’s largest government primary school and the Sydenham Campus of Copperfield College.

The suburb was created only recently and it is still a developing area. A large water tower (known locally as the “The Golf Ball”) is a major landmark of the outer northwestern suburban area.
