Car Battery Replacement in Melbourne

Your battery does more than start the engine. It powers your car’s electronics and keeps everything running smoothly. If your car is slow to start, a battery warning light has come on, or the battery keeps going flat, we’ll find out why. And if you do need a car battery replacement, we’ll fit the right battery for your vehicle.

We test the battery, starter motor and charging system before recommending anything. That way you only replace the battery if it genuinely needs replacing — and your new battery isn’t let down by the same fault that killed the old one.

Why we test before we replace

A flat battery isn’t always a bad battery. Common causes include:

  • An alternator that isn’t charging properly
  • Something drawing power while the car is parked
  • Corroded or loose battery terminals and cables
  • Lots of short trips that never let the battery fully recharge
  • Age, and Melbourne’s hot summers and cold winter mornings

Fit a new battery without finding the cause and you can be back where you started within weeks.

Battery volts explained simply

A few numbers tell us a lot about your battery’s health. Here’s what we’re looking for.

Resting voltage — how charged is it? A fully charged 12-volt battery sitting overnight should read about 12.6 volts. Around 12.2 volts means it’s only about half charged, and below 12 volts it’s effectively flat. Small differences on the meter make a big difference to how the car starts.

Cranking voltage — can it handle the hard work? Starting the engine is the toughest job your battery does. The starter motor draws a huge amount of current, so the voltage dips while the engine turns over. A healthy battery stays above roughly 9.6–10 volts during cranking. If it drops lower, the battery is struggling — and it will usually show up first on a cold morning.

Think of it like the water pressure in your house: a good system holds steady when someone turns on the shower, a weak one drops to a trickle.

Charging voltage — is the alternator doing its job? With the engine running, the alternator recharges the battery. On most cars it should sit somewhere between about 13.8 and 14.7 volts (some newer “smart” charging systems vary more, so we test to the manufacturer’s specification). Too low and the battery slowly goes flat. Too high and it overcharges, which shortens battery life and can damage sensitive electronics.

Volt drop — is power getting where it needs to go? Even a perfect battery can’t start the car if the power is lost on the way. Corroded terminals, loose connections or a worn earth strap act like a kink in a garden hose. We measure how much voltage is lost across the cables and connections while the engine cranks. If more than about half a volt is going missing, the problem is the connection, not the battery — and that’s often a much cheaper fix.

Our car battery testing and replacement service

  • Battery health test: We check resting voltage and test the battery’s cranking ability against its rating, including checks for a failing internal cell.
  • Cranking voltage test: We measure how well the battery holds up while starting the engine.
  • Volt drop test: We check the cables, terminals and earth connections for power loss.
  • Starter motor check: We confirm the starter isn’t the cause of slow or difficult starting.
  • Charging system test: We make sure the alternator is charging at the correct rate — not too little, not too much.
  • Supply and fit: If the battery needs replacing, we fit the correct type for your vehicle, including AGM and EFB batteries for stop-start vehicles.
  • Battery registration: Many European and newer vehicles need the new battery registered with the car’s computer so it charges correctly. We take care of this as part of the fit, so your new battery lasts as long as it should.

Signs of a flat or failing car battery

  • The engine turns over slowly or just clicks
  • Headlights or dash lights dim when starting
  • The battery warning light comes on
  • You’ve needed a jump start recently
  • The battery is more than three or four years old
  • There’s corrosion on the terminals or the battery case looks swollen

If you notice any of these, have the battery tested before it leaves you stranded.
