What is an alternator?

Alternators get their name from the term alternating current (AC).The alternator, alongside a voltage regulator and a battery (add internal link to battery page) form the core components of your car’s charging and electrical system (add internal link to electrical system page). Alternators generate power for the battery and for the electrical components of your car such as the interior and exterior lights. Alternators are usually located near the front of the engine and are driven by an alternator belt that is driven by the engine’s crankshaft pulley.

The alternators in most of today’s cars are driven by a serpentine belt (add internal link to serpentine belt page), or one belt that drives all components that rely on crankshaft power. Alternators produce AC power through electromagnetism to run the various electrical systems in your car and power generated is also stored in the battery.

Common symptoms of alternator failure include:

  • A warning light or symbol in the shape of a car battery flickers on or permanently appears in your dash display.
  • Your battery does not perform as it should and cranks slower than usual or not at all
  • Electrical systems and accessories in your car do not perform properly and this could include things like headlights being dim and power windows operating very slowly
  • Burning smells and unusual noises coming from the engine bay
  • Your car’s engine may stall because there is not enough power to keep the engine running.
